Gallery Opening Saturday Night!
Dusti Bonge opening reception 6:00pm - 8:00pm in the Duckett Gallery
"...And There is Dancing in the Sun" is an exhibit of the paintings of nationally renowned artist Dusti Bongé. Dusti Bonge was Mississippi's first abstract painter and the only member of the Abstract Expressionist movement. She exhibited her work at the prestigious Betty Parson's Gallery in New York City from 1958 until 1972, as well as many other galleries and museums around the country. Her work is today cared for by the Dusti Bonge Foundation, Inc.

Discover Bellydance!
Session 101 with Alyssa is designed for the student who has little or no experience with bellydance. This session will include instruction on correct posture and a breakdown of many bellydance movements. Every first-time student receives a free personalized bellydance journal to keep all notes and weekly handouts. Topics include a history of bellydance, Arabic words heard in popular songs, famous bellydancers, and more. You will also learn a short choreography to a popular Middle Eastern song and be bellydancing right away. To learn more about Alyssa, click here.
Classes are scheduled for June 18, 25 and July 2, 9, 16, 23.
The cost is $79 and you must be 18 years or older to register.

Art Keeps Kids Cool in the Summer!

In the morning, the focus will be on design elements: line, shape, texture, space, value, color and other principles. Instructor Hanneke Gast will help young artists develop an understanding of techniques and instill the wonder of painting and seeing as and artist.
In the afternoon, instructor Suzanne Weidie will lead workshops in clay and other art media giving children an entire day of creative fun! Register for the morning session, the afternoon session, or both!

YMCA Announces New Children’s Fitness Program
Ocean Springs, MS – The Blossman Family YMCA is adding a new program to encourage children to have a healthy lifestyle. The CHEC class – “Children’s Health and Exercise Class” – is a four-week program for children 7-12 years of age, focusing on the benefits of regular exercise and healthy habits.
Developed by YMCA Wellness Director Joey Conwill, M.S. Exercise Physiology, and Perry Smith, YMCA Personal Trainer and B.S. Exercise Physiology, the program will feature structured exercise training, healthy eating tips, exercise field trips and family activity fun nights.
“Through this program, we want to give your child the tools necessary to have a better quality of life and to set realistic healthy lifestyle goals,” said Conwill. “And they’ll have fun while they learn.”
Registration is now underway; with the class set to start June 1st. Cost for the program is $65.00 for YMCA members and $85.00 for program participants. Financial assistance is available. Sign up today at the Blossman Family YMCA at 1810 Government Street

June Mini-Workshop: Mixed Media

by Patt Odom - This workshop is already taking applications and starting to fill. Wonderful opportunity for your young artist to bloom and discover what art really is. The children will be exposed to many different concepts and techniques in art making. All materials will be furnished by the instructor. The techniques to be used this week will include:
1. We will explore the process of print making with acrylic paint.
2. We will make “artificial” etching with foam board and nails
3. We will do a batik using tempera paint and ink.
4. We will execute a drawing using the idea of light source and shading.
5. We will do a painting using water media with hands, sticks, cards and brushes.
6. We will learn a bit about composition and design, color, texture and pattern.
7. We will explore the ways and means of drawing correctly and seeing correctly.
8. We shall have lots of fun in the process. Expect to take home lots of wonderful art works!
